A little over three years ago my son fell forty feet, four stories and the outcome was a Traumatic Brain Injury. For the months that followed Adam had to relearn how to walk, talk, eat and observe the world around him. When our family decided to move towards a newer form of therapy, Constraint Induced Therapy, Adam met Tami Toms. Tami is a specialist in Constraint Induced Movement Therapy which is retraining the brain to do what it once knew to do so easily. She is the energetic, professional, focused physical therapist who set Adam on a new path of recovery with her knowledge of CIMT and specialized "tools" such as Saebo and Bioness products to help stimulate and assist Adam in regaining strength in his weakened right hand and leg. With Adam she observed his limitations then designed exercises and therapies to focus on improving those limitations. Tami structured a training program and personalized exercises to help Adam accomplish daily chores that many of us take for granted. Holding a glass, turning on a light switch, opening the microwave - tasks to help gain independence. Things may never be as "good" as before, but what you want is to make the situation better. A person may not be able to jog again, but may be able to walk. Cooking a full dinner may not be possible, but using the microwave or modified cooking may be possible. These actions are what Tami looks for - day to day activities that can help a person to be independent again. Adam is now twenty-five, and though he won't be the quick moving, fast thinking young man he was before, he currently is driving, going to college, working part time and going to the gym. He wants to get back three years of his life. He's striving for a "new perfect." Adam's search to find his "new perfect" was helped along by the dedication of Tami Toms, physical therapist. All the best, and remember if there is a shred of hope for a better tomorrow - that tomorrow will come.
